a church without god

if you lose god
what is left
besides springbok rugby
biltong
braaivleis
sunny skies
and chevrolet
everything that is
as it is
the knowledge
you must live
now
while you live
allow that knowledge
to spur you on
to enjoy your time here
in harmony
with everything
people already know
what is right and wrong
never mind
what the word
has to say about it
even when a hand
is placed on the bible
in court
it's hardly ever opened
when the judge wants to brood
over the good and evil
of a case
we win the freedom
to live for ourselves
once, all the way
though the believer too
lives only once
a tenth
is seized
of his time
of his income
and of his reality
if you love your church
then keep your church
and do good work
there is more than one reason
to sit in a pew
because though church is the place
to honour god
god himself lacks nothing
by definition
given the almightiness
after all it's a human need
to be part of something bigger
a church is a place
where people tell each other stories
breath in clouds
about outrageous things
a man and a woman
can travel through deserts together
without greeting each other
physically
that's what churches are for
so people come together
gather round
to be human together
to create god
to get to know people
across the fence
so it's better that we
even if only for now
limit god's power
and give people credit
because people are real
god
in
the head
godmaking is as old
as mankind
yet gods die
otherwise everyone would
still be obsessed today with
the very first god
going to church is going to the movies
before movies were movies
it tells you a story
feeds and inspires your soul
largely innocent
though sometimes not
be careful
let us not revel
in the sins of others
do remember
the old church murdered
may a church never ever
do that again
release yourself
from the expectation
of action from an apathetic god
the rescue you already receive
is your own doing
and the people around you
who lift your spirits
because you pray
put your wishes
love and sorrow into words
you make clear
to yourself
where your heart sits
set your inner compass
you clear a route
between need
and fulfilment
love is lightning
charged in all directions
a natural attraction
older than gods
is love god
and
god is love
love for love lightens, enlarges
love for hate
darkens your sight
shrinks happiness
sours your dust
keeps you busy with evil
all day
stuffed with hate
gods are fashion
come and go with the years
there is however the constant:
every soul believes
its god is
everyone's god
though not everyone believes
in its god
where did you hear of god
from god himself
or in other people's
retellings about god
in every church
it is always
a human
who preaches
man is the god
of the book
the creator
the writer
who made
the whole book
and everything in it
if you let religion go
sin disappears along with it
but not the consequences
of what you do
even without god
good and bad exist
what you choose
to be
is what
you yourself
write down
beside your own name
if you abandon hell and heaven
the illusion of righteousness bursts
and you're one small step closer
to reality
even if it hurts
it's better to know
than to hide the pain
under a bushel
of wishful thinking
to live
is to stand
before death's door
lifelong
a church is a place
where the living dish up stories
collect alms
with a grand tale
told in bulk
ideas sprout
in the damp soil
of a curious group
who observe
everything already happens
regardless of god
the route from god to us
always has a human in between
even if they'd say
that god sends them
to carry his word
just realise it's different
from talking to the boss himself
the church of old
was tv one
everyone tuned in
to the same story
from childhood
as it was
in biblical days
when everyone could only watch dallas
maybe god does exist
but the contradictory evidence
we have at our disposal
of who or what god is
lets me rest with the fact
that the god of consensus
is not god himself
but rather the soothing effects
of togetherness
your own feeling
relationship
and name for god
rather believe that
than be bent
to the will of people
who only want to recruit you as a member
reality is
man is pragmatic
even if you find
the most fabulous tale
full of promises of
after-death gifts
so wonderful that
it makes one wish
it were true
it remains a story
one can live alongside
with a place on the shelf
among all the other stories
that generated power
stronger than electricity
lit human hearts
to shine bright
holy
like a story
about god
for a time
cosy the thoughts
of communal thinking
everyone knows something
no one knows everything
everyone knows enough
to brood
and cluck together
because god knows
together we are
something
birth
the gateway
that determines your god
is random
it was that close that you were muslim
hindu or jew
or latter day saint
which makes me feel
whatever the story
we are
all
creatures
who want to hang out somewhere
for whatever reason
and a church without god
can offer peace
counsel and rescue
and make you feel human
and met
and it already exists
everywhere
around every corner
and that's good
